Deadline extended for 2011 Government Leadership University

Hillsborough County, FL -- The deadline to sign-up for Hillsborough County’s 2011 Government Leadership University has been extended to Friday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. 

The free 10-week GLU course gives you insight on how your County government works. Those interested in learning more about Hillsborough County government leadership, unraveling government red tape, and establishing relationships with department directors and staff are encouraged to apply.

Class sessions will be held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., from Sept. 13 – Nov. 15.

Hillsborough County, FL -- Hillsborough County Commissioners are looking for residents to serve on County citizen advisory boards.

Residents interested in seeking appointment must be registered voters in Hillsborough County. These are voluntary positions, and members serve without compensation. 

The deadline for applying is Thursday, Sept. 1.  Appointments will be scheduled for a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners in September or October.

Tampa, Florida --10 News has learned one of the casualties of the Hillsborough County Attorney Office budget cuts is the son-in-law of Chief Deputy Administrator Helene Marks.

Daniel Feinman was hired as a full-time outside counsel in the office in 2008.

He was hired to help in eminent domain cases even though he had no experience in that area of law.

Although Feinman was an outside contractor but he was required to work 5 days a week, 7 hours a day at the County Center in downtown Tampa.

New law allows food entrepreneurs to cook up business

Monday marks one month since a law took effect that aims to help food entrepreneurs across the state.

It's called the Florida Cottage Food Act, and it lets budding chefs start a business in their own kitchen without having to get pricey permits.

County Attorney offers major cuts at budget hearing

Tampa, Florida -- Hillsborough County Commissioners are trying to figure out ways to cut the budget.

A major cause of concern is the County Attorney's budget.

Administrator Mike Merrill proposed a 5.8 percent cut, but some Commissioners say that is not acceptable.

In order to avoid having the Office budget decimated, Interim County Attorney Don Odom is making his own proposal to cut the office by 17 percent.  In order to do that, he says he will cut 8 positions and save taxpayer $1.4 million.

Hillsborough School Board considers 5-year construction plan

The Hillsborough County School Board will consider the district's tentative five-year construction plan at a workshop and as part of its regularly scheduled School Board meeting, 1 p.m. Monday, July 25 and 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, respectively.

The five-year construction plan, presented annually, is available online as item A 6.04 on the July 26 School Board agenda.

Both meetings will take place at the Raymond O. Shelton School Administrative Center, 901 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

Hillsborough County, FL -- Reminder: Hillsborough County is holding a series of public hearings to receive input on its upcoming two-year budget cycle (FY2012/2013).

This second hearing will be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds in the Special Events Center West, located at 4800 US Hwy. 301 North, Tampa on July 21.
